ORIHON (ORI~fold) (HON~book)

This Orihon is an accordian style folded journal created to chronicle thoughts and feelings I've had over the past year to the present. This is a critical year of my life and I felt the need to record it through an artistic endeavor. I have several Orihon in various stages of completion. I started one with the intent of recording my family history...it forced me to revisit many childhood issues...and I had to put it "on hold".

In the planning of this event, we decided we would use it to record our ancestry. We (kama'aina ~ kama (child) aina (land) = child of the land), of many nationalities that have landed in Hawaii, have a unique microcosm of blended cultural diversity. What I appreciate about our "melting pot" is the fact that every culture is embraced instead of categorized. This is especially evident at Thanksgiving. I remember my Auntie Helen seved turkey, sushi, chow mein, glazed ham, kahlua pig (yummm), lomi lomi salmon...and more. It's truly the authentic way to celebrate our American holiday to give thanks. Our children learn the hula, karate, strum the ukulele, dance at Obon Festivals, set off firecrackers in February to celebrate the Chinese New Year without thought of crossing concious boundaries of cultures. On the "Mainland"...life in America began with those who came on the Mayflower. In Hawaii, Hawaiian history is covered thoroughly while young. We always give honor to the Hawaiians that inhabited the islands before it was "discovered". Others emigrated from China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Portual, Thailand, India and more.
